Orissa to give free power to BPL families Monday, May 12, 2008 Bhubaneswar: The Orissa government on Monday decided to give all BPL families power connection free of cost while setting the rural electrification target in a span of one-and-half years. "As electricity connection is considered a parameter of development, the provision of power connection free of cost will bring a change in BPL families living standard", Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said after chairing a meeting where rural electrification progress was reviewed. Orissa has as many as 40 lakh BPL families to be benefitted from the announcement. Official sources said while all major villages in several districts were being electrified through Rajiv Gandhi Grameem Vidyuti Karan Yojana (RGGVKY), small villages were being covered by the Orissa government's own Biju Gram Jyoti Yojana (BGJY). Electrification of 3700 villages would be completed by end of June this year, sources said adding that Chief Minister asked the officials to complete the work within a specific time frame. please give wide publicity to the possibility of increase in electricity tariffs and how the distcos will be compensated for the same with full protection by the paying users
